On depression

After learning about feminism, queerness and LGBT, I found that the marginal identities we have discussed are mostly noticeable among normal people. We can study gender identity by observing how surroundings, education backgrounds and family bring-up lead to different gender recognition. However, I noticed that there are certain marginal groups whose struggles may tend to be neglected or stigmatized due to the fact that they appear normal on the surface.

Therefore, I decided to create a series of illustration pictures based on the mental sufferings of a depression patient, Katy. She is 17 years old and spent the past 3 years living with depression. The causes of her mental illness are very complex. They include the closing down of her family’s restaurant, the fear of not being able to get into university, and mostly the loss of self-esteem. The reason why Katy considers herself marginalised is that she feels being isolated from the world she lives in; every time she seeks help from those she knows she receives not comfort but pain.

The aim of this project is to unveil the mental struggles and stigmatisation that a depression patient goes through. The invisible pressure from the society is pushing depression patients; it alienates and silences them.
